Take Your Dog to Work Day (June 26, 2009)
First celebrated in 1999, Take Your Dog To Work Day was created to honor the great companions dogs make and to encourage their adoption from humane societies, animal shelters and breed rescue clubs. This annual event encourages employers to experience the value of pets in their workplace on this day to promote pet adoptions.

On June 26, 2009, businesses, animal shelters and pet-care professionals from around the world worked together to better the lives of shelter dogs everywhere.  Thousands of businesses opened their doors to employee's pets on this day, in celebration of the great companions dogs make.  Pet Sitters International invited all businesses to Join TYDTWD as they celebrated a decade of working dogs.  They encouraged all employers across the country -- large and small -- to become a true friend of the canine community by helping Pet Sitters International promote pet adoptions in a positive and proactive way.  Visit the Take Your Dog To Work Day website to learn how you can participate in TYDTWD in 2010, register your business, and spread the word about this wonderful event.

New Meetup Group Formed - Tehachapi Dog Lovers (June 2009)
Susie Atherton, owner of Canine Creek, formed a new local networking group in Tehachapi to bring dog lovers and rescue groups together.  The Tehachapi Dog Lovers Meetup group is for people in the Tehachapi CA area to meet others with a common interest... dogs!  You can visit the group's home page to can arrange a play date at Meadowbrook Dog Park, find a walking buddy in your neighborhood and get some exercise with your dog, hook up with friends at restaurants with dog-friendly patios, volunteer to help local rescue groups, locate a dog trainer and organize a group obedience class, learn about local dog-related events and much more.  The TDL website is located at TehachapiDogLovers.com.

Bringing Low-Cost Spay/Neuter to Tehachapi (May 2009)
Following is a blog post from Sharon Cornelison, President of the Tehachapi Humane Society:
"With all the abandoned animals constantly cropping up rescue groups are really stretched to the limits trying to help out. The best way to stop this problem is to prevent the litters. Spay and Neuter is what Tehachapi Humane Society is based on and ways to help with this has been our voucher program. We are involved, along with other rescue groups and Canine Creek, in trying to find a means of spaying and neutering that is less costly.

There is a foundation located in Santa Clarita called Angeldogs Foundation that is willing to travel with their mobile unit to different locations and perform lower cost spay/neuters. They would be willing to come to Tehachapi if they can get at least 30 animals to spay/neuter in a day.

They offer canine spay/neuter for $110 which includes a rabies vaccination and micro-chipping, and for felines the cost is $90 which would also include the rabies vaccination and micro-chipping. If you are interested in this please contact Angeldogs Foundation at (888) 504-7729 or visit their website angeldogsfoundation.org to find out the particulars. If they get enough animals signed on to fix from our area, they will schedule their mobile unit to come to Tehachapi. This would include the areas of Keene, Hart Flat, Caliente, Tehachapi, Mojave, California City, Rosamond, Boron and North Edwards. If you are low income, they will honor our vouchers. Call Angeldogs first to get an appointment, after you make the appointment call the Tehachapi Humane Society at 823-0699, Menu #1 for a voucher application. Remember, spay/neuter vouchers are for low income residents of the above areas mentioned, and are for animals that are privately owned.  Sharon Cornelison, THS"

Canine Creek Joins Twitter (April 2009)
In the effort to keep our customers up to date in the age of "instant information", Canine Creek has joined the social networking site Twitter.  Follow us to find out what's news at the Creek each day.

Protect Jobs, Buy American, Shop Local (April 2009)
Dear Canine Creek Customers,
I don't know about you, but I'm exhausted hearing how bad the economy is, day after day, on the news. However, I'm not giving in to the doom and gloom, and neither should you, because there IS something each of us can do to help get our country back on track...
BUY AMERICAN.

When attending pet industry trade shows in February and March, I made it my mission to buy as many Made in the USA products as possible, and I found quite a few. Some recent additions to Canine Creek include beautiful, high quality leather goods from Auburn, natural meat treats from Healthy Partner, nylon chew bone toys by Astro Bone, sausage and burger treats from Happy Howies, and tough deer and elk antler chews from the Rocky Mountain region. Of course, these products are in addition to the other Made in the USA companies we already stock, including collars, leashes and harnesses from Lupine, and durable toys from eco-friendly American companies such as West Paw, and Planet Dog, among many others.

Thanks to you, our loyal customers, Canine Creek's sales are still in a double digit growth rate so far this year, and we recently hired another new staff member. The next time you come in, please welcome the lovely and very sweet Katie. Katie is the seventh Tehachapi resident on the Canine Creek payroll. Thank you for supporting not only our business, but
LOCAL JOBS as well.      Susie Atherton, Owner

5th Anniversary Birthday Bash & Charity Fundraiser - Apr 25, 2009

On Saturday, April 25th, 2009, Canine Creek will celebrate its fifth year in business with a charity fundraiser for Doberman SOS at the annual

Scrub-A-Dub for Dobies

Canine Creek will be donating 100% of its self-serve bathing proceeds to the Doberman rescue.  Please come down and wash your dogs for charity.  The last bath starts at 5:30pm.  First come, first served.

So that we may raise as much money as possible, we request that customers limit baths to 30 minutes per dog on Saturday, April 25th, but a cash donation to Dobie SOS will earn you more tub time. FREE upgrade to Bellyrubs organic shampoo to all bathers!  Last year, this event raised over $3,200 for the Dobies in just one day.  Please join us and help make the 2009 fundraiser a success as well.  Victoria Sackett of Victoria's Pet Makeovers will also be at Canine Creek from 1:30pm to 3:30pm on April 25th for a nail trimming and dog spa day. Nails are $15 per pet, or you can get a package deal of nail trim, anal glands and ear cleaning for only $25.  Walk-in's will be accepted, but you can sign up in advance at the store.  Victoria will also be donating 100% of her spa day treatments to Doberman SOS, so please bring your pets to Canine Creek that day for some pampering, and help the rescue dogs.

Bake Sale Fundraiser:  Treats for people will be available for sale on event day as well, starting at only $.50 each. The Doberman Pinscher SOS volunteers are baking all kinds of goodies, from cookies to biscotti to Amish friendship bread and even people cookies decorated in different breeds of dogs.  All proceeds from the bake sale will benefit the Dobies, so please stop by and treat yourself while you help the rescue dogs.

Want to meet some of our vendors and ask questions about their product lines?  Representatives will be on hand to share information on the following brands:  Wellness, Old Mother Hubbard, Holistic Select, Planet Dog, Taste of the Wild, and Chicken Soup.  These vendors will be providing products for the Doberman SOS raffle.  And, although they will not be in attendance, Natura has provided raffle gift bags with goodies from the Innova and Evo lines.  The nice folks from showandsport.com have also donated supplements and treats for the raffle drawing.  Randy from Picture This Graphics, the official pet photographer of Canine Creek, will be on hand selling his prints.

And more going on nearby:  Saturday, April 25th is also the Earth Day celebration in Tehachapi, with events and vendors at Mama Hillybeans and the Apple Shed from 11am to 4pm, so plan on coming into downtown with the whole family and check out the fun.  Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome at both venues on the outdoor patios.

POST EVENT FOLLOW-UP:

It was rather windy and cold on Saturday, but that didn't stop our loyal customers from coming out for the annual Scrub-a-Dub for Dobies which raised nearly $1,300 in just one day!  Thanks to everyone who came out to wash their dogs, the folks who provided yummy treats for the bake sale, and our friends and customers who donated time and money to help the rescue dogs.  And, a sincere thank you to our vendors who braved the weather to pass out lots of free samples.  Hope to see you next year.
